Fury at MP's stance on women's rights on abortion
The Tory MP representing Great Bedwyn, Ramsbury, Aldbourne, Shalbourne, Froxfield, Little Bedwyn, Baydon and Chilton Foliat says he doesn’t agree women have "an absolute right to bodily autonomy in the case of abortion" in a debate over the American abortion ban.
Devizes MP Danny Kruger – the son of Bake Off judge Prue Leith – is refusing to comment further.
Mr Kruger told the Commons earlier this week that he would "probably disagree" with his colleagues about the decision.
Many UK MPs have voiced their concern after the US Supreme Court ended 50 years of constitutional abortion rights by overturning Roe vs Wade.
Boris Johnson said the move was a "step backwards" for women’s rights.
Mr Kruger said: “They think that women have an absolute right to bodily autonomy in this matter, whereas I think in the case of abortion that right is qualified by the fact that another body is involved.”
Mr Kruger added: “I would offer to members who are trying to talk me down that this is a proper topic for political debate and my point to the front bench is I don’t understand why we are lecturing the United States on a judgment to return the power of decision over this political question to the states, to democratic decision-makers, rather than leaving it in the hands of the courts.”
Danny Kruger was among the 61 Conservative MPs who voted against extending access to abortions in Northern Ireland last week.
His remarks have sparked a backlash on social media with some constituents warning women not to vote for him again.
Author and columnist Caitlin Moran tweeted: “He would prefer politicians make these decisions for you. He wants it "debated." This is how it started in the States."
