Ramsbury Tennis Club’s ‘fantastic step forward’

Ramsbury Tennis Club has completed resurfacing two additional, artificial clay courts.

That brings its total to four, comprising over half of the club’s seven courts.

The surface is identical to that laid in 2020 which has since become a firm favourite among members and coaches.

Ramsbury remains the only tennis club in Wiltshire to offer clay courts - a real point of pride and a major asset to the local tennis community.

Synthetic clay is widely regarded as one of the best all-round playing surfaces, suited to players of all ages and abilities.

Enthusiasts say it is gentler on the joints, playable in most weather conditions and offers a slightly slower pace of play, making rallies more enjoyable and easier to control.

The loose surface allows players to slide into shots and move quickly around the court. It also suits baseline and topspin play.

More than 80 per cent of the world’s top professionals learned to play on clay.

Senior club coach Neil Little said: “Clay is brilliant for teaching technique, footwork and patience.

“It really helps players develop their game at every level.”

With four clay, two tarmac and one AstroTurf - all floodlit with modern LED lighting - Ramsbury is now one of the best equipped community clubs in the South of England.

The club also runs a year-round professional coaching programme delivered by a team of top Lawn Tennis Association accredited coaches led by joint head coaches Lewis Fletcher and Catherine Graham.

Club treasurer Ian Smith added: “It’s a fantastic step forward for the club.

“We’re proud to offer facilities of this quality right here in Ramsbury.

“Whether you’re just picking up a racket or have played for years, these new clay courts are a joy to play on.”
