Reading West MP secures parliamentary debate

Alok Sharma will use the debate to raise awareness about a case involving two of his constituents, Kris Jarvis and John Morland, of Reading, killed in February (2014) by a reckless driver as they cycled through Purley, leaving seven children without a father.
Alexander Walters, aged 31, of Beech Road, was driving without insurance, at 70mph in a 30mph zone, whilst already disqualified from driving, was nearly two and a half times over the alcohol limit and was being pursued by police.
He had also taken cocaine less than 24 hours prior to the accident and had 67 previous criminal convictions.
Mr Sharma said: “I do not believe that the ten year sentence received by Mr Walters was a sufficient punishment for the devastation he caused and I look forward to raising this case in Parliament to try to influence the outcome of the review currently ongoing by the Ministry of Justice.”
Tracey Fidler and Hayley Lindsay, the fiancées of Mr Jarvis and Mr Morland, have launched an online Giovernment petition, which calls for a change in the law, to enable judges to impose a jail term per death, rather than a 14-year maximum.
Visit http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/67911 to sign the petition, which has over 24,000 signatures.
An independent investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) continues into

the role of Thames Valley Police (TVP) in the incident.
The parliamentary debate takes place from 4.30pm to 5pm in Westminster Hall.
