Record-breaking numbers at fete

Although the final figure has yet to be confirmed, a member of the six-strong fete committee, Sheena Cartwright, said that the amount raised was “significantly more than last year”, after record numbers turned up to the 56th annual fete and all food and drink was sold out.
“It was the most successful fete anyone can remember,” said Mrs Cartwright.
The event was opened at 12.30pm by Silchester’s Got Talent winner, Leah Ford, aged 10, a pupil of Silchester Primary School, who went on to perform gymnastics in the fete arena.
The overall winner of the dog show, which was organised by Lou Rawes and saw 115 entries, was Errol, a vizsla cross, with owner Heidi Wright of Tadley.
Also supporting the fete was Silchester villager and Miss Berkshire 2014, Melissa Gibbons, fresh from the Miss England contest in Torquay.
Her mother and fete committee member, Paula Gibbons, said:
“She took part in an egg- throwing competition and got covered in the sticky stuff, but took it all in good stride.”
Attractions in the main arena included Calleva Falconry School, music by Tadley Band and dance displays by Alton Morris dancers, Silchester School Country Dancers and the All Star Dancing Academy.
Furry fun at the ferret races with Hants and Berks Ferret Club also entertained the crowds, as well as a tug-o-war, where girl power proved triumphant after Silchester Primary School PTA women’s team beat the PTA men’s team, taking two pulls out of three.
Children’s entertainment included mini-golf, Punch and Judy, face-painting and Furry Foot the clown, with traditional games such as egg-throwing, and refreshments including a barbecue, hog roast and tea tent, plus stalls and a Charmborough Ring (portable belfry) which gave visitors the opportunity to try their hand at bell-ringing.
Money raised will benefit St Mary the Virgin church in the village, a Grade I-listed building, which is more than 850 years old.
