Record breaking year at Englefield 10k run
The run, now in its third year, was held at the Englefield estate near Theale, and is jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Reading Abbey and Tadley Runners.
As well as the main 10k run, which winds around the deer park in full view of Englefield House, this year there was also a 2k fancy dress fun run and 3.2k run for juniors.
The 10k course record was broken by Newbury Athletic Club member, TomWatkins, who finished in 36 minutes and 56seconds, more than a minute faster than the previous course record.
The event raises money for a number of charities, including the Thame
s Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust, which flew over during the event.
One of the event’s organisers is Ufton Nervet resident and member of Reading Abbey Rotary Club member, Jim Walker. He said: “It was another great success for the Englefield run. It was the third year in a row and the course record was smashed.
“Its growing popularity is evidenced by the doubling of last year’s entries, which itself had doubled the first year’s.
“Competitors came from across the Thames Valley and from as far afield as Scotland, Spain and America. Next year it might be the International Englefield Run.
“The day was almost perfect for this type of activity; a bit of sun, a bit of
wind, and no rain, though some runners felt that a degree or two less hest would have made the day ideal.
“First estimates put the net funds raised at over £3,500, with the bulk of that going to the air ambulance. This is a fantastic result for everyone concerned and means that the air ambulance can keep flying and saving lives a little longer.”
Mr Walker also thanked the Benyon family, who own the Englefield Estate, for letting the event by held at the estate.
