Record number of entries for Newbury Carnival

With less than a month to go until the popular parade takes to the streets, excitement is building among schools, businesses, charities and entertainers as they prepare for the biggest parade to date, with over 60 confirmed entries so far.
The past will come to life in the town centre with parade entries exploring the theme of ‘Travels in Time – past, present and future’.
A fly-past by the Battle of Britain memorial flight will also transport the town to a by-gone era, and it is hoped that the recently-approved town flag will also fly with pride.
The Newbury Twin Town Association is constructing a guillotine after being inspired by Newbury’s French connections.
The date of the carnival also coincides with Bastille Day, July 14, when French revolutionaries stormed the prison in 1789.
Twin Town membership secretary Gillian Durrant said: “We’re having a great time getting ready for the carnival parade, with members of all ages getting together making costumes, building props and even building an imitation guillotine – not a fully working model.”
“We have already held three costume making workshops and this weekend we are looking forward to a papier-maché session creating some severed heads for the basket at the foot of the guillotine.”
The parade will set off from Pound Street at 2pm, before winding its way to Victoria Park, where a fete and funfair will be held.
