Regular car boot sales for Memorial Ground?
The sales would be held between 7am and 1pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays on a site area of 31,119 square metres, providing rooms for up to 250 cars. This figure includes the 60 existing spaces.
A temporary barrier will be put up during the sales to fence off areas of the field where sellers will be parked. Public rights of way will remain open.
Nearby resident, Zoe Scott, said she fully supported the application adding that it was nice to see the field being used more frequently.
Thatcham town councillors also raised no objections to the proposals.
Technical consultant, Chris Watts, said that the field had previously hosted car boot sales on the site and could see no objection in principal.
He added that the field can currently host events for 28 days of the year without planning permission. Gary Johnson (Lib Dem, Thatcham west), who sits on the Memorial Hall board of trustees, raised concerns about the possible impact on residents.
He said: “If we are going to have about 200 cars on a Sunday at 7am on the day of rest when you don’t do anything until 9am and there’s car boots being slammed; I’m worried about the residents.”
Mr Johnson also said he was concerned about the possibility of the field being churned up in the wet weather.
But Richard Crumly (Con, Thatcham central) said: “For 28 days they don’t need permission anyway and to some people this will be very popular.”
However, other residents have objected, with one saying; “I do not feel the field should be used for this purpose, when previously used the noise on a Sunday morning was disturbing and also causes foot traffic through Tennyson Road and additional cars parking for the boot sale which I consider impacts on residents.
"The noise from both pedestrians and cars on a Sunday morning in addition to that already experienced would not be welcome.”
Town councillors raised no objection in principal to the plans but asked that no activity take place too close to residents properties. Mr Johnson abstained from the vote.
A decision is expected from West Berkshire Council by Monday, December 22.
