Remember the fallen today (Remembrance Sunday)

Parades being held across West Berkshire

THE district will honour the fallen 101 years after the outbreak of the First World War.

2015 also marks the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign and the Battles of Loos and Neuve Chapelle. It's also 70 years since VE and VJ Day, which officially marked the end of the Second World War.

Newbury’s Remembrance Sunday march will begin along Pelican Lane at 10.25am, moving on to London Road, The Broadway, Northbrook Street, Mansion House Street and finally to Market Place, where councillors and local dignitaries will join war veterans and residents for a moment of reflection and two minutes silence.

Wreaths will be laid at the war memorial prior to processing into St Nicolas Church for a service.

The marching parade will be led by Watership Brass, the Newbury town band, followed by veterans and serving soldiers. All are welcome to attend.

To mark Remembrance Sunday in Thatcham, a parade including veteran and serving members of the armed forces, youth organisations, councillors and the mayor will march from the Kingsland Centre car park to a service at the war memorial on the A4.

After two minutes silence the parade will head to St Mary’s Church for a remembrance service hosted by the Royal British Legion.

Sections of the A4 and the town centre will be closed to traffic in both directions for various periods between 10.30am and 11.30am on the day.

The Thatcham branch of the Legion will gather at the war memorial at 10.50am for Armistice Day on November 11.

A short service, including two minutes silence, will be held at 11am. Free refreshments will be served in the town council chamber afterwards.

Cold Ash’s parade will leave the Acland Memorial Hall at 10.35am and progress along Hermitage Road to Cold Ash Hill. An Act of Remembrance at the Parish War Memorial begins at 10.45am in the St Mark’s churchyard.

A service will be held inside the church after two minutes silence at 11am and the laying of wreaths. Cold Ash Hill between St Mark’s School and St Mark’s Church will be closed from 10.35am to 11.10am during the service.

Cold Ash Heritage Group will hold a Men of the Memorial exhibition in the Fisher Room telling the stories the 32 men with links to the village who died in the First World War.

Hungerford, will be remembering its fallen with a Remembrance Parade through the town. All are invited to meet at the town hall at 10.30am to join the Royal British Legion march at 10.45am to the Bridge Street War Memorial.

Representatives from the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) will also be in attendance. The High Street will be closed to traffic from 10am, so visitors are advised to arrive and park in good time.

Villages throughout the Lambourn Valley will also be holding similar services.

Next week's Newbury Weekly News will feature five pages of remembrance coverage.
