Baughurst Repair Café volunteers celebrate fixing 1,000 items

A repair café in North Hampshire celebrated a big milestone last Sunday (May 18).

For it was the day Baughurst Repair Café repaired its 1,000th item – a Salter Dual Drawer Air Fryer belonging to Carole Barrett from Little London.

To date, volunteers reckon they have saved customers nearly £40,000 by repairing and reusing their household items, with successful fix rate of four in five items.

The café is taking part in the nationwide Big Fix this month, organised by Devon County Council, which challenges repair cafés nationwide to breathe new life into broken items, reducing landfill.

New mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Colin Phillimore also visited and brought along two pairs of garden shears to be sharpened.

Repair café volunteer Rosemary Harle is an ambassador for St Michael’s Hospice, an independent charity based in Basingstoke, which is one of the mayor’s two chosen charities for his civic year.
