Volunteers in Newbury and Thatcham do their bit for the environment fixing broken items to reduce waste

Volunteers have been hard at work again fixing broken items and helping to reduce waste.

Did you know that smaller electrical items are often thrown away in the UK because of minor faults?

Well, Newbury and Thatcham Repair Café may have the answer.

Volunteers have been busy fixing items brought in by members of the public, which may require a slight adjustment.

One example includes a retro turntable taken in on Sunday (June 29) which was slowing down as it played.

After investigating the cause, a volunteer made an adjustment to its arm position detector.

Other electrical items brought in include vacuum cleaners and lamps.

But at Sunday’s event, it was a child’s electric balance bike which had ‘stopped working’.

The owner himself had investigated the possible causes, but a volunteer found an issue with a switch within the frame of the bike, which he replaced.

The child was happy to have his bike working again and said he looked forward to using it in the park.

The next repair café is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, at Newbury Methodist Church Hall between 2pm and 4.30pm, with last check-in at 4pm.
