Reports of earthquake tremors near Newbury
The British Geological Survey said that people near Newbury had reported feeling the shocks of a 2.9 magnitude earthquake 1km northeast of Winchester at 6.30pm.
The BGS said that more than half of the reports described the shaking strength of the earthquake to be moderate, mainly with a trembling effect, and described the sound strength as moderate to loud.
Over half the reports stated that windows rattled, with one resident saying: “felt like a rhino had run into the house."
Seismologist Kostas Lentas, at the International Seismological Centre, based in Thatcham, said that although the centre did not have instruments to record data in the UK, the earthquake was very small and an irregular occurrence, owing to the UK not being a very tectonically active region.
Mr Lentas said that he did not think people should be concerned but those affected should check their homes for any cracks that may have appeared following the seismic activity.
