Hungerford residents complain of A4 speeding traffic 'roar'
RESIDENTS living off the A4 approach to Hungerford are living in misery from a speeding traffic "roar".
A group of householders told Hungerford Town Council's recent highways and transport committee meeting that the noise in Cottrell Close was intolerable.
They revealed that West Berkshire Council had collected data which showed there was indeed a problem, particularly with eastbound traffic.
One resident told the meeting: "There's a constant road as people accelerate away".
Another, who asked not to be named, told the Newbury Weekly News: "We had a Speed Indicator Device on the A4 last December.
"Some motorists just ignored it and you could see some slow down.
"But since it’s been removed traffic has gone back to normal.
"There needs to be something permanent that fines speeding motorists and allows the residents to enjoy living here".
Town councillor Nick Schlanker said the problem was more widespread.
He mentioned Church Street, and Priory Avenue as areas which had problems with speeding traffic.
The committee is considering a number of options to tackle speeding and the issue will be debated at a future full town council meeting, when it is hoped a resolution will be made.
