Residents offer help to soldiers

Soldiers from 4 Rifles left their base last night (Friday) to help shore up peoples homes and reassure residents.
And this morning (Saturday) residents in Shaw came to offer any help they could, including hot food and drinks, to the men who have been called in to help combat the rising ground water.
It is said that an army marches on its stomach and this afternoon residents bought in a lunch time snack of hot dogs to keep the soldiers going.
Speaking to Newbury Today this afternoon Sergeant Major McCutcheon of 4 Rifles said that residents support meant a lot to the men and helped boost their morale as their planned leave for Friday had been cancelled to deal with West Berkshire's flood crisis.
Residents support follows reconnaissance teams being deployed last night in Donnington, Shaw and across the Kennet and Avon Canal to the Bone Lane industrial estate to monitor ground water levels.
Soldiers were also deployed to Newport Road to put up a defensive wall and sandbag homes while another squad was sent to assist a lady in Shaw Road.
Sergeant Major McCutcheon said that troops were now preparing for future operations and that troops from Bravo company, based in Hermitage, had been called in to Alpha company's area of responsibility last night to assist with operations in East Garston.
Sgt Major McCutcheon said: "The community have been out to support us and the boys aren't wanting for food when we go out."
