Resounding No to Alternative Vote




The referendum on a change to the voting system was heavily defeated locally, mirroring the decision across the UK

THE final result for the referendum on a change to the voting system has been declared locally and the numbers in West Berkshire and in Basingstoke and Deane are no different to those reflected by the rest of the country.

In West Berkshire, the No vote won by a decisive margin of more than two to one, a result that was mirrored in Basingstoke and Deane.

In West Berkshire, 39,235 people voted No, while only 15,637 voted Yes, and in Basingstoke and Deane 38,681 voted No, with 14,837 having voted Yes.

Overall, the Yes campaign was routed across the country and voters rejected a proposed change to the voting system.

Shortly before 10pm the final result for the country was revealed, with 68 voting No and 32 voting Yes, representing a total of 5,863,519 votes and 12,640,417 votes respectively.
