Restaurants forced to close for power cut this evening (Tuesday)
NEWBURY Market Place will be affected by a power cut from 8.30pm this evening (Tuesday).
Restaurant owners and other businesses in the Market Place were informed by Southern Electric by letter this morning (Tuesday) that the company had to carry out work on an underground cable tonight.
But some are unhappy about the lack of advance notice.
One restaurateur, Jamie Allen, of the Hoggit and Hoof said: “This will cost us a considerable amount of money and we have been told we are not eligible for compensation. We were only informed of the power cut this morning.”
Mr Allen said the planned power cut follows on similar problems on Saturday, when burnt fuses caused chaos.
Several restaurants, including his own, had to close as the power went out for up to four hours at a time.
A spokeswoman for Southern Electric, Hannah Greave, said the break in power tonight will last from 8.30pm until 6.30am tomorrow morning and will affect 25 customers [properties] in Cheap Street and Market Place.
She said: "We would like to apologise to all our customers for this disruption. It is due to a cable fault."
