Retired vicar publishes 40th book

Thatcham man, Canon David Winter, will launch his book at a celebration at St Mary's Church

THE former head of religious broadcasting for the BBC has published his 40th book.

Eighty-one-year-old Canon David Winter, of Nideggen Close, Thatcham, will be hosting a celebration to mark the launch of his latest book Facing the Darkness and Finding the Light.

The retired cleric said: “I wrote it at the time of the financial crisis and it seemed terribly appropriate.

“I'm pleased with the book and I hope a lot of people come to the celebration.

“I have generally liked all my books but I like this one because I think it does speak to the contemporary scene.”

Mr Winter has been writing books since 1964 and his bestseller, Hereafter, about life after death, has sold more than 250,000 copies in a dozen countries.

His latest book relates the visions of the biblical book of Revelation to contemporary issues, and he argues that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were intended as a message of hope in anxious times rather than just a vision of horror.

He believes that they can still provide hope for modern readers.

He said: “I wrote it with the thought of Haiti in mind.

“I have said to people that, in an age of Harry Potter, we are a bit better at understanding

visions.

“This is a book that is filled with pictures – some are horrific but they are all things that are still present in our world.”

He added: “I've been commissioned to write another one.

“Until I'm incapable of thinking straight I'm going to continue writing.”

Mr Winter moved to Cold Ash in 1995 and served as vicar at St Mark's Church before he retired in 2000.

Before his ordination as an Anglican priest, Mr Winter was a teacher of English and religious studies for five years, a magazine journalist for 10 years, a BBC producer for 20 years and became head of religious broadcasting for the BBC.

During the past 40 years, he has published 40 books including one novel, two biographies, an autobiography, and an anthology of poetry.

The book launch takes place next Thursday, at St Mary's Church, Church Gate, Thatcham, from 7.30pm, and all are welcome to go along.
