Revealed: The roads in Theale that now have a 20mph speed limit

Speed limits in Theale are to be reduced to 20mph in a bid to improve road safety.

West Berkshire Council is implementing a pilot scheme in the village, which affects residential roads that are currently 30mph.

A 20mph speed limit is to be trialled in Theale from Friday, October 20, reducing limits from 30mph

The council is also reducing limits on some roads which are either the national speed limit or 40mph, instead taking them to 30mph.

The new limits start on Friday, October 11, and if successful, could be extended to other areas.

West Berkshire Council’s Stuart Gourley, who is the portfolio holder for Environment and Highways, said the project aligns with a commitment to introduce 20mph speed limits in residential areas where residents want them.

“This pilot scheme is an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve our highways, road safety and enhance the quality of life for our residents,” he said.

“By reducing speed limits in Theale, we are addressing local concerns, making our roads safer, and supporting the Council’s long-term commitment to creating safer, more sustainable communities across West Berkshire.

“This has been an ongoing project with lots of input from across the council, thank you to everyone who helped make this pilot come to fruition.”

This view was echoed by ward member for Theale, Alan Macro.

He said he had received many complaints from villagers over several years, leading him to create petitions calling for 20mph limits in residential areas such as Crown Lane and Meadow Way.

“I am very pleased that these petitions have now resulted in the introduction of 20mph limits covering the main residential area of Theale and a 30mph limit in The Green,” he said.

“These limits will make it much safer for pedestrians walking along the many narrow pavements in the village and should encourage more people to walk or cycle to the shops and schools.”
