Rishi Sunak cabinet reshuffle: Reading West MP Alok Sharma and North Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse out
The third Prime Minister of the year Rishi Sunak's new cabinet does not include West Berkshire and North Hampshire MPs.
Mr Sunak, one of the richest and youngest to sit behind the doors of No 10, made a number of appointments on Tuesday, but there was no job for Reading West MP Alok Sharma or North Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse.
Newbury MP Laura Farris, a keen supporter of Mr Sunak, backing his Ready4Rishi campaign when he ran against Boris Johnson earlier this year, also did not make the cut.
Mrs Farris has congratulated Mr Sunak and said he will be a “brilliant leader for the challenges ahead”.
Mr Sharma will continue as President of COP26 but is no longer a member of the cabinet.
The Reading West MP, who kept his place in cabinet during Liz Truss’ 49 day leadership, will be attending the next COP27 climate change conference in Egypt in November.
North Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse left his post as education secretary moments before his successor, Gilian Keegan, was announced.
It was not made clear whether he had resigned or was sacked.
Mr Malthouse took to social media to say: “As I leave the DfE [Department for Education], I do so with profound gratitude to officials, my private office team, and brilliant advisers, who all worked so hard.
“I hope my successor can harness their commitment to the most important mission in Whitehall: the future and welfare of our children.
“I must also add my thanks to the team at the Cabinet Office who brought us through a difficult summer in good shape, and helped ready the country for an even more difficult winter.
“And finally a huge thank you to all the nursery workers, teachers, academics, staff, social workers and others, who help bring our young people through childhood and set them on a path to success.
“Our time together was short, but you will hear more from me in the months to come.”
