Hungerford road closed as fire crews tackle gas leak
There have been delays in Hungerford today (June 26) as fire crews tackled a fire and gas leak on a major road.
The High Street was reported to have been closed after workmen "hit a main gas line while cutting into tarmac".
The incident took place opposite pub The Borough Arms, who provided updates as crews attended the scene.
The pub took to Facebook to notify pedestrians and motorists of the closure.
It said: "Openreach workmen working opposite the pub hit a gas main line while cutting into the tarmac earlier. The sparks caused a rather large fire.
"They’ve put the flames out but the gas is still flowing. Fire crew are in attendance and are managing people's safety and the road has been closed for safety.
"We are still waiting for the gas company to attend and shut the gas off."
The Openreach work on this road was for utility repair and maintenance works.
The pub has since said that the issue has been sorted and the road is open.
