Road closures in Newbury town centre for repaving
Market Place, Mansion House Street, and Wharf Street are currently closed but shops can still be accessed
THREE Newbury town centre roads were closed off this morning to allow road repairs and maintenance to get underway.
Market Place, Mansion House Street, and Wharf Street were closed from 7am this morning and will remain closed to traffic all day every day until the works are due to finish on Saturday, February 19.
Despite slow-moving traffic on the A339 through Newbury during this morning's rush hour, West Berkshire Council spokesman, Phil Spray, said that the start of repairing and replacing paving works in and around the market square had gone smoothly and added: “We are not aware of any traffic problems as a result.”
The works are expected to cost £49,000 and will also include the maintenance of the paving in Northbrook Street, Newbury, which was laid five years ago.
Northbrook Street will be closed to traffic from Monday, February 21 until Sunday, March 6 and Bartholomew Street North will be closed for the same reason over the weekend of Saturday, February, 19 and Sunday, February 20.
Pedestrian access to shops will not be affected, nor will deliveries, and areas will be kept clear for the market to operate as usual.
Instead of using the rank in Market Place, taxis will be operating from the 'feeder' rank in Wharf Street.
Bus diversions will be in place using the A339, Bear Lane, Cheap Street and London Road and there will be temporary bus stops installed in London Road for passengers wanting to access the north end of town.
