Road Safety campaign with a difference launched in West Berkshire schools
West Berkshire Council has rolled out The Ride of Terror, which has been specially created and is delivered in workshop style by local author and illustrator John Chapman.
It uses cartoon schoolboy character Jonnie Rocket to deliver four key messages to Year 6 pupils as they prepare for moving up to secondary school and using school transport.
The council's executive member for highways and transport, David Betts (Con, Purley-on-Thames), said: "The Ride of Terror is groundbreaking in its approach to teaching road safety lessons and has been very well received by the twenty schools that have done the workshop so far."
Executive member for children and young people, Irene Neill (Con, Aldermaston), said: "This is a wonderful way to teach children important road safety lessons.
"They relate to the Jonnie Rocket character and it is presented in an easily digestible cartoon strip format, which is how most children choose to gather information."
Phase one of the roll out to 20 West Berkshire schools is now complete.
It will now go out to the rest of the schools during the summer term and it is hoped that phase two will continue with a follow up project in secondary schools.
