Well Street between Newtown and Burghclere near Newbury to close for four months whilst nearly 1km of pipes are replaced by Thames Water
A stretch of road between Newtown and Burghclere is expected to be closed for four months while nearly 1km of ageing wastewater pipes are replaced.
Thames Water will be carrying out the replacement work along Well Street, and sections of the road will be closed throughout the entire week and parts of the weekend throughout the four-month period.
The work begins this Sunday (March 2) with an anticipated completion date of June 30, with full road closures in place on Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.
In a letter to locals, Thames Water customer experience coordinator George Allaway said: “This work involves replacing approximately 950m of ageing wastewater pipes using open-cut excavation, starting from the junction of Ox Drove and progressing along Well Street.
“Phase 1 will focus on the first section of this route.
“By carrying out these upgrades now, we can prevent future bursts, contamination, and service interruptions.
“We are sorry for any disruption this essential work may cause and will do everything we can to keep it to a minimum.
“By upgrading your pipes in a planned way now, we can prevent sudden and disruptive wastewater issues in the future.”
Diversions will be signposted, and pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained throughout the period of the works.
Thames Water stated that residents “may notice some noise and vibration during working hours” but it will “monitor and take steps to reduce this where possible”.
The water utility company also said that residents’ wastewater service would not be affected during the works.
