Kings Road and Boundary Road reopen after West Berkshire Council are flooded with complaints about traffic gridlock

Kings Road and Boundary Road in Newbury have been reopened this afternoon.

The move comes after two days of traffic gridlock around the town centre.

The roads are currently being reopened temporarily while a new plan to carry out the works is drawn up, after residents complained of days of "pure hell".

In a statement West Berkshire Council said: "Due to the traffic issues that have arisen following the closure of Kings Road and Boundary Road in Newbury, we have decided that the road closures should be temporarily suspended.

"The roads were closed to carry out highway improvements and drainage connections associated with the development of the adjacent former Sterling Cables site.

"We are now working with the developer and their contractors so that better traffic management plans can be agreed to help alleviate future disruption.

"We do apologise for the inconvenience these works have caused.

"The contractors are in the process of removing the signs so that the roads are open and traffic can flow more easily by this evening (Wednesday)."

The closures were put in place on Monday to allow highway and drainage improvements associated with the Sterling Cables development to be carried out and were due to last for around seven weeks.
