Roads reopened after earlier closures

The A339 in Newtown, Newbury, and two lanes on the M4 have now been reopened

Motorists experienced long delays in the district this afternoon after a lorry hit power cables on the A339 and an accident caused two lanes to shut on the M4.

A lorry hit the power cables in Newtown Road at about 10am this morning (Tuesday) and the road was closed until about 1.30pm.

Spokeswoman for Southern Electric Sam O'Conner said: "Engineers have had to isolate the cables and that's why the road has had to be closed.

"It is affecting about 50 homes at the moment and we apologise for the inconvenience.

"We are hoping the power will be back on by mid afternoon. About 2 or 3pm."

Two vehicles were also in collision on the westbound carriageway of the M4 near Junction 14 for Hungerford this morning.

Lanes one and two had to be closed while the vehicles were recovered but were reopened in the last hour.
