Roadworks prompted lengthy delays to weekend motorists on A339
Traffic lights controlled traffic travelling on the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A339 while those entering and leaving Pinchington Lane were also controlled.
Road users reported delays of up to an hour when travelling south on the Sandleford link from the A343 Andover Road junction to Pinchington Lane.
A number of local businesses were also affected, including those based in Newbury Retail Park.
New Look store manager Dawn Tucker said: “It affected us to some degree with sales [and] we never had a cash collection.
“We have been left with no change...because they couldn’t get here.
“Yesterday it had a big affect on us, some of my staff were 45 minutes late.”
M&S Simply Food store manager Adam North reported similar problems, adding that a seven per cent drop in footfall had led to a £13,000 decrease in takings compared to usual weekend trade.
“We were massively affected,” said Mr North. “It was horrific, [the customers] were absolutely fuming, they said it had taken between half and hour and an hour just to get into the retail park.”
The delays stemmed well into the evening and delayed the opening time of Matt Richardson’s Hometown Hero tour at the New Greenham Arts Centre, Greenham Business Park, by around 15 minutes as a number of audience members were stuck in the tailbacks.
The performance of Grease at the Corn Exchange was not said to be affected.
All lanes at the junction have re-opened today (Mon), however West Berkshire Council is yet to confirm if any further work will be required.
