Talk on possible Roman temple discovered near Hermitage held at Boxford
A talk on an exciting new Roman discovery was held on election night.
Members of the public were treated to a “superb and fascinating presentation” by Jo Thirtover on Thursday about the latest findings from a new Roman site uncovered near Hermitage, said Joy Appleton, of the Boxford Heritage Project.
The talk was held at Boxford Heritage Centre, which made national headlines itself last June with the discovery of 6,000-year-old piece of timber.
Mrs Thirtover has been leading a community group to research and excavate the Hermitage site.
Much of the high-status building, thought to be a temple, had been robbed.
But Mrs Thirtover explained it was still possible to determine the use and age of the site – using building material.
Referring to a screen presentation, she showed other known Roman features, including roads and buildings, suggesting the location had been carefully chosen by the Romans to be highly visible.
Mrs Thirtover will be continuing work on the site for some time.
The BHP, which hosted the talked, wished the group every success.
It has already investigated three Roman sites in Boxford, including a unique Roman mosaic discovered in 2019.
