Royal Engineers to march through Newbury for Armed Forces Day
Newbury will host its Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday, June 28.
Three Regular squadrons from 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic), previously based at Denison Barracks in Hermitage, will march through the town centre to celebrate its longstanding connection with Newbury.
The squadrons have been involved in numerous conflicts from the Boer War to the World Wars.
Lord-Lieutenant of Berkshire Andrew Try will lead a formal review of the parade at 11am, joined by Mayor of Newbury David Harman and commander of the Royal Engineers (Geographic) colonel Alex Harris.
The parade will march through the streets of Newbury and end with a final ‘general salute’ and three cheers from the assembled troops and veterans.
Mr Harman said: “It will be an honour to host this red-letter day for the town of Newbury.
“Our long and friendly relationship with the Royal Engineers culminated in the granting of the Freedom of the Town in 1997, and we are proud to celebrate that ongoing bond.
“The presence of the Royal Engineers in Newbury is a valued part of our civic life, and I warmly invite residents and visitors alike to come and share in this very special occasion.”
The Newbury Royal British Legion, Newbury Sea Cadets and SSAFA Armed Forces Charity are also expected to support the parade.
Everyone is encouraged to attend and witness the display of military tradition and community pride.
