Rubbish mound causes a stink in Speen

Increasing amounts of rubbish over the Christmas period built up outside flats in Kersey Crescent, owned by Sovereign housing association, after the refuse bins became full and residents filled bin bags and left them for collection.
A neighbour, who lives in nearby Sutton Road, Barry Smith, said it took three calls to West Berkshire Council before the issue was resolved.
“It has been going on since before Christmas. The rubbish is absolutely disgusting.”
A spokesman for Sovereign Housing, Roy Probert, said that the rubbish was cleared last Wednesday. Mr Smith’s joy was short lived, however, for less than a week later the bin bags had begun to stack up again.
“I have been on to West Berkshire [Council] and they have just palmed me off with a pile of rubbish, excuse the pun” said Mr Smith. “It’s totally unacceptable.
“If there’s young kids playing in the garden and a rat attacks them, it’s the end of the baby’s life, it’s as simple as that.”
Mr Probert said: “There was an accumulation of rubbish at the Kersey Crescent flats over the Christmas and New Year period. Veolia emptied the bins on Tuesday, January 8 and the neighbourhood wardens attended to clear the remainder of the rubbish.”
On Monday, he said: “The neighbourhood wardens went to Kersey Crescent today and found eight black bin liners of rubbish and two cardboard boxes on the floor by the bins. These have been cleared.
“There was also a bed frame, which they are seeking to recycle. We are working with West Berkshire Council and residents to ensure that this kind of situation doesn't arise again.”
