Rumours Downton Abbey film crew moving from Highclere Castle scotched
Reports emerged in national media at Christmas that the cast was were likely to ‘up sticks’ and move from Highclere Castle to a film set at Alnwick Castle, following the huge success of the Downton Abbey Christmas Special, largely filmed during the summer (2014) at the Northumberland location.
Some 5.8m viewers tuned in to the Christmas special, placing it eighth in the 2014 festive national television ratings, and the second highest rating for ITV.
But Lord Carnarvon told Newburytoday: "The 6th series is to be filmed at Highclere and work starts in February. We have had no discussions with Carnival about a 7th or further series so the article in the Mail is just speculation."
The series has proved financially lucrative for the castle in recent years, with visitor numbers trebled and opening days sold out months in advance - including Easter and Spring 2015, according to the castle’s website.
