Santa Jog in Newbury this morning

Bobbing Father Christmas figures to set off today (Sunday) on fundraising jog in Voctoria Park

Hundreds of red-robed Father Christmas figures will set off this morning (Sunday) to puff and pant their way around Victoria Park for the annual fundraising Santa Jog.

The fun-packed leg stretcher is over a 1km (O.62 miles) route, and all adult participants will receive a free Santa Claus outfit to wear during the jog - and keep afterwards.

With entry fees and funds raised on the day in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), people can choose to either run around the course or take a gentle stroll instead.

Children are encouraged to dress in their favourite festive costume for the family event, with a ‘best dressed' competition at the start of the jog to start the festivities.

Mary Bareham, fundraising volunteer manager for the BHF South region, said the jog was “a fantastic, fun event” that raises life saving funds

“Last year we had over 300 people take part and we hope to beat that this year,” said Mrs Bareham, adding that the charity received “great support” locally and from Newbury Town Council, which said organisers could use the park for the event free of charge.

The Newbury Santa Jog starts in Victoria Park at 11.30am today (Sun) and will finish around 1pm. Entry fee £10 adults and £5 for under 14's.

Registration can still be made today before the start of the jog. For more information, telephone (01892) 893918, email south@bhf.org.uk, or visit www.bhf.org.uk/newburysantajog2011/
