Race to replace Boxford church tower
The historic Grade II-listed St Andrew's Church in Boxford is currently raising funds to restore its tower roof.
The church has already raised more than £63,000 towards the repairs.
But it has a long way to go to reach its £150,000 target by the end of the year – and is appealing to the surrounding community for its support.
Fundraising began in January to replace the water damaged timber beams – currently held up by temporary supports – lead roofing, coping stones and to add a new internal to external drainage system.
Plans to refurbish the 13th-century church as a community space were first proposed in 2008.
Works began in May 2010 and included installing a kitchen and disabled toilets. Workmen also made an exciting discovery when removing Victorian cement render to reveal flint work and a rare Saxon window in the chancel.
The small oak timber frame, carved from a solid piece of timber, is unusual in having a wooden shutter – believed to be the only one of its kind in England.
But funds expired before the remaining works on the tower were complete. And these are becoming more urgent.
Plans have been approved by the Oxford Diocese and West Berkshire Council.
Boxford Parochial Church Council appeals to any sponsors and members of the community to support the project.
A cake sale is being organised on June 4 in aid of the Tower Fund, followed by cream tea at Little Thatch on a date in July, still to be confirmed.
