Scale model show raises more than £700 for RBL
Nearly 450 visitors attended the Newbury Scale Model Club’s annual show last week to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
The event, held at Park House School, featured various modelling competitions as well as an Airfix ‘make and take’ section for children to put their miniature manufacturing skills into action by building a model Spitfire, which they could then take home. Club secretary Ian Shumsky said that the event went really well and the club raised £750 for the Legion, £300 more than last year.
Local author and historian Roger Day was on hand to discuss the district’s war history with members from various clubs, including the Newbury and Reading Wargames Society and the Newbury Model Railway Club, who held its own annual show on February 9, when hundreds of model rail enthusiasts pulled into St Bartholomew’s School.
Club member Steve Fogg said that he was pleased with the attendance at the event, especially the number of younger visitors, and the level of interest in the raffle prize of a Hornby model kit of The Flying Scotsman.
Mr Fogg said: “It was smashing.
“The event caters for all age groups and it was good to see lots of smiles on people’s faces.”
Both clubs said they would like to thank the schools for allowing them to use their premises, as well as Airfix and Hornby for providing the prizes and the model kits.
