Scarecrow trail brings back childhood memories
The event, now in its third year and organised by the Mortimer Village Partnership, sees families, businesses and local schools place the mannequins around the village for residents to find during half-term week.
This year saw 35 entries including the owl and the pussy cat sail their pea green boat and baa baa black sheep bring his three bags to the village, following the theme of nursery rhymes and children’s songs.
A straw poll was then held to determine the favourite entries, with £75 going to the winners.
Returning from Gloucester for the favourite adults scarecrow award was Dr Foster by the Greatrex family, The Munn Family picked up the childrens favourite award for Humpty Dumpty, while the Wallers scooped funniest scarecrow with Little Miss Muffet.
Secretary of the Mortimer Village Partnership, Lynn Hannawin, said: “The scarecrows produced are always fantastic. The support and enthusiasm makes it a genuine event for the village by the village.
“It gets people out and about whatever the weather - although it was rather quiet on the very blustery Monday - and the local shops and eating establishments see extra trade. It is also excellent value for money for parents wanting to entertain the children over the half term holiday - at just £1 a trail map, children can be out in the fresh air for several hours, enjoying walking around and looking for the next scarecrow.”
Don’t fret if you missed the trail as it is set to return in next year’s autumn half term.
