The bus, which was taking pupils to the Downs School, in Compton, left the road and ended up in a verge between East Ilsley and Compton.

All the pupils were picked up by another coach and taken to school safely.

Some children have reported “aches and pains” and are being treated at school.

A spokesperson for West Berkshire Council, which is in charge of the school transport, said: “Earlier this morning a coach travelling to the Downs School was involved in an incident which left it in a verge on the East Ilsley to Compton road.

“Another coach company, known to the council, passed the scene and was able to pick the pupils up and get them safely to school.

“No significant injuries have been reported but a number of pupils are reporting some aches and pains and arrangements are being made for them to be assessed by medical professionals at the school.

“There is no further information about the circumstances of the incident at this stage, but we are speaking to the transport operator to understand more about what happened.”
