School girl grows whopping 12 ft sunflower
Ten-year-old Annabel Roberts beat the competition in the annual Speen Parish Allotment competition by two inches.
Annabel, described as a “very enthusiastic gardener” by the treasurer to the allotment Karen Barlow, is a deserving winner, after overcomming a two-year battle with Leukemia.
She was awarded with a chocolate gold medal, a £5 gardening voucher and a bunch of sunflowers by Chairman of the allotment association, Clifford Sells on Monday.
This isn’t the first award the young gardener has won, also scooping first prize for largest pumpkin last autumn at the allotment, in Station Road, Speen.
Her mother, Lynne Roberts, revealed Annabel has a knack when it comes to gardening, growing spectacularly large cucumbers on her own allotted space on her parents patch.
She said Annabel was “very excited” when she found out she’d won.
“We were amazed when it really started to shoot up,” she added. “It just took off!”
