Organisers of the town’s free display had said that the Henwick Worthy Playing Field was the only viable site if the event were to remain free.
Last year’s display was held at the Memorial Playing Field after local resident Richard Garvie took over the running of the event from Thatcham Rotary Club.
Organisers had planned for a crowd of 3,000 people at the free event, but a larger venue is now being sought after more than 10,000 attended.
However, the move was rejected by members of the Henwick Worthy joint management committee, owing to concerns over possible damage to the sports pitches.
Mr Garvie said: “It’s obviously disappointing that our proposal to use the Henwick Playing Field has ultimately been unsuccessful, but we were encouraged by an offer of help by some of the members of the committee to find an alternative solution within the town.”
Mr Garvie said that a fundraising comedy night at Newbury’s Corn Exchange had raised £500 for the Memorial Hall and Playing Fields, with another £600 raised for Thatcham Town Cricket Club.
Talks are now being held to host the event at the Memorial Field once again.
The chairman of the Memorial Hall Trust, Lee Dillon, who is also a Liberal Democrat councillor for Thatcham north, told the Newbury Weekly News: “The Memorial Hall trustees are happy to work with Mr Garvie to see if it’s possible to host the event again this year and hopefully we should be in a position to say yes or no within the next couple of weeks.”
