Search for young athletes for Royal County of Berkshire Show
Meanwhile volunteers are already hard at work, marking out Newbury Showground.
The event might be over in just one weekend, but the meticulous marking out process involves a team of 10 people spending 12 half-days to set out the plan for an anticipated 600 stands.
To ensure that each attraction has its allotted space, the full layout is carefully pegged out across the 177-acre green field site. To assist in the process, one of the show’s contractors provides depth lines and perfectly straight front lines.
This year, aspiring young Olympians will join Clare Balding in a lap of the main ring on both September 15 and 16.
Young athletes are wanted to represent a variety of sports from the county to run alongside Ms Balding with the Olympic torch.
The show’s organisers are calling on local sports groups to put forward their brightest young hopefuls. Ten individuals aged between six and 17 will be selected.
So far 11-year-old Jake Pemberton, a Reading FC Academy player from Newbury, and 16-year-old Michaela Bell, a wheelchair basketball player from Thatcham who suffers with cerebral palsy, have been selected.
Ms Balding said: "I passionately believe in identifying and encouraging sporting talent in young people. ‘Inspire a generation’ was the Olympic motto and I’m pleased that we’ll be continuing the legacy at this year’s Berkshire Show.”
General manager, Becky Elvin, said: “There is perhaps no TV personality more suited to help us showcase the sporting skills that are emerging across the local area.
“She has a real affinity with the area, and with the agricultural roots of the show.”
Ms Balding will also be signing copies of her new book, My Animals and Other Family, at the show.
