Second body named in Sian murder case

Police have identified remains found in Gloucestershire as another Swindon woman

OFFICERS leading the murder case of Sian O'Callaghan have now identified human remains found at a second site.

After discovering Swindon woman Miss O'Callaghan's body near Uffington, Oxfordshire, on March 24, police started searching for human remains at a second site at Eastleach, Gloucestershire.

Police revealed today that those remains were of Becky Godden-Edwards from Swindon, who is believed to have gone missing eight years ago, and would have celebrated her 29th birthday yesterday (April 4).

Swindon taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, aged 47, has been charged with 22-year-old Miss O'Callaghan's kidnap and murder, and is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday.

Detective Superintendant Steve Fulcher, of Wiltshire Police, said today (Tuesday): "As you will appreciate, Becky's family and loved ones are trying to come to terms with this devastating news and we are affording them all the comfort and sympathy we can at this time, helping them come to terms with their grief.

"Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding Becky's disappearance and subsequent death.

"Part of these inquiries will be to speak to Chris Halliwell and we will then make a decision on any appropriate steps to take."

The detective appealed to anyone who knew Miss Godden-Edwards from 2002 onwards to contact the police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Miss O'Callaghan disappearance from Suju nightclub in Swindon on March 19 sparked a major search by police and local villagers of Savernake Forest, a few miles west of Hungerford.

Posters have also been placed around Ramsbury, urging anyone who was out 'lamping' or poaching in the area on March 19, from around 2am to contact the police with any information they might have about suspicious activity in the area, a green Toyota Avensis estate car, or persons in the area around that time.
