Thames Valley Police issue section 60 order in Newbury

An order which allows police to stop and search individuals without reasonable grounds has been put in place within Newbury for the next 24 hours.

The section 60 order, in place from 5pm today (Thursday, March 24) to 5pm tomorrow (Friday, March 25), covers an area bound by Greenham Road, Pinchington Lane and the A339.

It has been put in place after there were reports last night of a group of people in Ewing Way with weapons, such as baseball bats, poles and knives.

Inspector Alan Hawkett said: “This Section 60 order has been put in place to protect the public and prevent any other incident involving weapons.

“The order gives officers temporarily enhanced powers to carry out stop and search checks within the area outlined in the map.

“You’ll see more officers in the area whilst the order is in place. Please speak to our officers if you have any questions or concerns.”
