Daredevil Debbie Mumford plans charity wing walk in aid of Newbury Cancer Care

A self-confessed daredevil is preparing for what some would see as the trip of a lifetime, but for her is just another day out.

Debbie Mumford, 60, from Thatcham, will undertake a wing walk this autumn to raise at least £2,000 for Newbury Cancer Care.

It follows on from a skydive last year… and next year she is hoping to undertake a loop-the-loop.

“I’m an adrenaline junkie,” she said.

“I took early retirement last year, on April Fool’s Day, and thought, ‘What did I do this for?’”

The result was a series of challenges, all to benefit West Berkshire good causes.

“I’d rather do that than help a big multi-national charity,” she said. “I want to keep it local.”

She chose Newbury Cancer Care for her latest stunt after learning one of her friends was being supported by the charity.

Founded in 1984, it helps people diagnosed with cancer and life-threatening illnesses by offering practical help and information, help with transport and support for specialist nurses and the day centre at West Berkshire Community Hospital.

“We would like to show our support for a local charity that is supporting family, friends and the local community,” Miss Mumford said.

“Any donation appreciated to a tremendous cause that will support 50 per cent of the community at some stages in our lives.”

She won’t be wing walking in the air by herself – sister Dawn Mumford is joining her.

“Dawn said she wanted to do it as well, and we will do the best we can,” she said.

“This is my first time doing a wing walk, but a lady in her 80s did one last year... I’d like to do it while I can still climb up on the plane.

“I love the sensation [of the challenges] and I’m not scared of heights.

“I’ve always been a daredevil, and loved fast cars and heights.”

That love extends to trying Formula 3000 and she’d love to give Formula 1 a go.

“It’s about using fun to contribute to the community,” she said of her reason for making her stunts charitable affairs.

Joining them when they arrive in Cirencester for the wing walk on Friday, September 6, will be friends and family.

“People are coming for a picnic, including family coming over from America,” she said.

“And Retirement Rebels members will be coming. It’s going to be fun.”

This is a networking group for people planning for or in retirement, helping them to live their dreams.

Miss Mumford, who turned 60 in April, is also hoping to boost the profile of Newbury Cancer Care’s work.

“I think it’s under the radar in a way: people don’t really know about it, and the way in which it supports people.

“This is a way to raise awareness of its work.”

It’s not the only fundraising event on Miss Mumford’s calendar.

Next month, she is planning a an afternoon tea event with Pimm’s, bubbly and beer in aid of Breast Cancer Now.
