Shaw-Cum Donnington Primary requires improvement

The report, following a two-day inspection of the voluntary controlled school in February, found that the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching and leadership and management all required improvement.
The Ofsted rating runs from outstanding to good, to requires improvement to inadequate.
Inspectors said that too few pupils were making good progress, especially in mathematics, and that while teaching was improving, it was not consistently good enough to ensure that all pupils made good progress.
The report highlighted that in weaker lessons, pupils did not always understand what they were being taught and that they were not always able to judge whether their learning had been successful.
However, the report recognised that the newly appointed headteacher, Deirdre Devine, had identified priorities and introduced changes to bring about improvements.
Mrs Devine said: “We are confident we can benefit from this inspection and increase the rate at which we are improving.
“That said, I believe there is much to be proud of in this report.”
The school received a ‘good’ rating for the behaviour and safety of pupils as they were ready to learn and had positive attitudes to school.
The report also noted that attendance figures had improved and were now above average and that persistent absence had been reduced but stated that the school was smaller than an average-size primary school, having 81 pupils.
To achieve a ‘good’ Ofsted rating, inspectors said that the quality of teaching could be improved by ensuring that marking included points for improvement and that pupils fully understood their learning.
Leadership and management could be improved by holding teachers more rigorously to account for their pupils’ progress.
West Berkshire Executive Member for Education, Irene Neill (Cons, Aldermaston), said: “This is a balanced report and I’m sure the potential is there to achieve a ‘good’ rating next time, or even better.”
The school will be inspected again within the next 24 months.
