Shoplifter 'wanted cell bed for the night'

Theft was a cry for help, court hears

A MAN stole from a supermarket because he wanted a warm cell in which to spend the night.

Newbury magistrates heard last Thursday how Matthew Charles Burton's actions were a “cry for help”.

The 44-year-old, of Newtown Road, admitted stealing spirits and goods together worth £19.95 from Tesco in Pinchington Lane, Newbury, on September 21.

Mike Davis, defending, said: “Rather than sleep rough, he got himself arrested to have a night in the cells. He has mental health issues and this was a cry for help.”

Magistrates made Mr Burton subject to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay a £150 criminal courts charge plus a £15 victim surcharge.
