Shoplifter who attacked security guard may face prison

Darren Mark Howe of Newtown Road, Newbury, appeared before town magistrates for sentencing for a range of offences on Thursday, January 8.
The 44-year-old was convicted of stealing alcohol worth £10 belonging to Iceland Stores in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, assaulting Daniel Gutteridge by beating him and obstructing a police officer, all on November 11 last year.
He has numerous previous convictions.
Mike Davis, defending, said his client had a “long standing drink problem” and added: “Indeed, he committed these latest offences in drink. He was caught shoplifting, then assaulted a security guard when confronted. He then misbehaved when the police were dealing with him.”
He added that Mr Howe was now seeking help with his drinking.
Magistrates ordered pre-sentence reports to be prepared on al all options basis, including custody.
Mr Howe was released on conditional bail until February 5.
