Shoppers help goalball Paralympians go for gold

Three members of the Sainsbury’s-sponsored Winchester-based team – Simon Goodall, Joe Dodson and Adam Knott – and their coach Knut Kursawe, were in the Newbury store in Hectors Way at lunchtime, and £305 was raised through customer donations.
The team was there to talk about the sport, which involves blind and partially-sighted players passing a ball containing a bell.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s, Carol Irwin, said: “They all wear a blindfold to ensure none has any advantage over the blind team members.”
Mr Goodall said: “We are honoured that Sainsbury’s is helping us to raise funds and touched by the public support on our road to the Paralympics.”
Adam Knott added: “All the money raised will be an enormous towards helping us achieve our dreams of Paralympic Gold.”
In the afternoon, they visited Sainsbury’s Tadley store, where they met the mayor of Basingstoke and Deane , David Leeks, talked to pupils from Silchester Primary School and raffled off a hamper.
