A project to refurbish the Kingsland Centre in Thatcham has finally been completed.

Works to replace the glass canopy, which partly covers the shopping centre walkway, started in December 2023.

Newburytoday understands the project was meant to last weeks.

But after 14 months of delays, it has now been completed.

One of the full glass panels fell over customers outside the Kingsland Café. One was in a wheelchair.

A spokesperson for Evolve Estates, which owns the site, said: “We have experienced a number of delays from contractors.

“The work has now been completed, apart from some minor snagging.

“Unfortunately, the glass panel shattered once above a member of the public during the works, but there were no injuries.

“Our health and safety team investigated internally and expedited the completion of the work.

“The refurbishment reflects a significant investment in the town centre.”

It added: “We also have some positive news.

“We are pleased to announce that Savers has exchanged a lease for a double unit, resulting in further investment in the town centre.

“We hope to announce further signings soon.”

Savers will be occupying units 13 and 14, where House of Cards is, where plans have been approved to knock down the separating walls to create a single retail unit.
