Siblings prepare for marathon

Several West Berkshire people are gearing up to run either the Reading Half Marathon or London Marathon

WEST Berkshire siblings Matt and Louise Bailey will run their first marathon together at this year's Virgin London Marathon.

The pair will be raising money for The Vision Charity, which raises money for blind and visually impaired children.

The siblings are veterans of half marathons, having completed 13 between them, however this will be the first attempt for both over the full distance of 26.2 miles.

Mr Bailey, a 31-year-old father-of-one from Newbury, will have his total doubled by Sainsburys, where he is an employee at the Newbury store, and he has already raised £500.

Miss Bailey, who works at Imago in Thatcham, said that despite running seven half marathons, she knows training for a full marathon will be tough.

“With a half marathon you can carry on as normal but training for a marathon just consumes your life,” she said, adding: “I know a lot of people will benefit from the money so that keeps me going. I always like to help children's charities because they pull on the heartstrings.”

Meanwhile, two Newbury brothers are preparing to run the Reading Half Marathon this month to raise money for local charity, Swings and Smiles.

Former Newburytoday.co.uk reporter, Ben Johnson, together with his brother James, are hoping to run the 13-mile course in costume in under two hours to help the charity build a playground for disabled youngsters in West Berkshire, which they said would benefit their profoundly disabled 14-year-old sister, Emily.

Another West Berkshire woman is also preparing to take on the challenge of both the Reading Half Marathon and the London Marathon to raise money for Naomi House Children's Hospice.

Emma Carter, a teaching assistant at St John the Evangelist Nursery and Infant School in Newbury, is aiming to raise more than £200 and her son, Philip, is also taking part in the Green Park Challenge to raise money for the children's hospice on the same day as the Reading Half Marathon.
