THAMES Valley Police officers have found signs of unsafe fires on The Ridgeway, the UK's oldest road.

Ash and other refuse were discovered by members of the force's Pangbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team on Tuesday.

The team subsequently took to Twitter with photos of the damage.

During the same patrol, officers were able to reunite a lost dog with its owners.

Dry weather is likely to exacerbate poorly-controlled fires, especially in rural and well-forested environments.

Moreover, flames have a negative impact upon rural heritage, including such historic trails as The Ridgeway.

In the UK, it is generally illegal to start fires away from your own property.
