Silchester primary school pupils go bananas at Fairtrade event

Over a Fairtrade Fortnight held at the school, pupils studied the banana and its journey from plant to plate.
On one afternoon during that period, the school hall was packed with parents and pupils eager to hear banana producer Dorothy Agard from St Lucia in the Windward Islands talk about the product.
The school’s Fairtrade committee coordinator Gill Garney said: “We are the only school in the area to be given the opportunity to hear first-hand what Fairtrade means to farmers.
“We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Fairtrade Foundation for making this possible.”
Sainsbury’s Tadley branch donated bananas and other ingredients for the children to make recipes using bananas and pupils set up a stall in the school hall to display their work and the food they cooked.
Ms Garney said that “everything from banana curry and banoffee pie to banana smoothies and white chocolate banana brownies were available to try.”
