Silchester road to be closed due to floods and drivers advised to check routes
Roads badly affected by flooding in the local north Hampshire area include Clappers Farm Lane, Silchester, to be closed due to the swollen ford the road crosses over and Park Lane, Silchester, which is passable with care, according to Hampshire County Council.
Union Lane, Kingsclere and also various locations along the B3051 Ashford Hill Road are all passable with care.
The road at Wade Road recycling centre in Basingstoke is also passable with care.
Towns particularly badly affected in north Hampshire include Romsey, with the A3057 completely closed north of the town, and Winchester, where Andover Road has been closed north of the city.
The county council reported on Friday (Feb 7) that in the preceding 24 hours, Hampshire had an average of 23mm of rain, and county councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment (Con Fareham Sarisbury) said the council’s teams had been working around the clock, dealing with flooding, fallen trees and emergency repairs:
“We will continue to do all we can with extra teams, gully emptiers and sandbags but the ground is so saturated now, and the rivers so full, there is really nowhere else for further rainfall to go,” said Mr Woodward, who continued:
“I would urge motorists to take extra care in these severe conditions and in particular to drive carefully through water at all times, and avoid swamping nearby properties and other road users. Drivers are also reminded to observe road closures and not to move signs, as they are clearly in place for safety reasons.”
