Silchester's Palm Sunday walk defies flooding
A procession will start at 9.50am from Silchester Village Hall, led by the Bishop of Winchester, the Right Rev Tim Dakin, together with re-enactors from the 2nd Augustan Legion, dressed as Roman soldiers and with Alfie the donkey.
Together, they will recreate the biblical Palm Sunday story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.
The procession will then make its way from the village hall, across The Drove - an old cattle run dating back to Medieval times, which crosses the village’s Roman site - Calleva Attrebatum.
The procession will end at St Mary the Virgin Church in the village, for an 11am church service.
By tradition of many years, the service has taken place in the open air, in the Roman ampitheatre, but this year, due to flooding of the ampitheatre, the venue for the service has been changed to the church.
Musical accompaniment will be provided by Tadley Concert Brass.
